Fly By Promotions Review and Giveaway: gMovies Subscription

Fly By Promotions recently contacted me to review gMovies and even though this April was one of my busiest months, I couldn't resist. I am one of those mothers . . .  you know the one that doesn't allow her child to watch "certain" shows that many people don't find offending or repulsive for children to view. I am disgusted by what I see on the television today and can't believe the cartoon options available for children to view. gMovies has brought our family movie night to a new level! I am ecstatic to have good movie selections that don't make me want to cringe. 

What is gMovies?

Technology Requirements

gMovies is a reasonably priced option for streaming videos online. Rather than exposing Alyssa to distasteful television shows and movies; gMovies serves as a wonderful alternative. The cost for a subscription is $4.99 per month. No contract is required and you have the ability to cancel anytime. But . . .  once you view a few movie selections, you may be hooked like we are!

Our Experience and Thoughts

This review came at the perfect time since we recently had to cancel our cable. We are movie lovers and enjoy snuggling on the couch together at the end of the day. Finding family-friendly movies can be difficult at times. gMovies made this process quite easy. My seven-year-old daughter could easily navigate the website to find a movie we could watch together. So far, many of the movies and shows we've seen have been appropriate for children containing no foul language or inappropriate scenes. I want the shows my daughter watches to be valuable and clean cut. However, some of the options we have on television and at the theaters are terrible. gMovies provides us with a solution to this dilemma. There's also a SEARCH option enabling you to find or search for particular titles. 

I can't tell you how excited I was to find several "Friends and Heroes" episodes available for viewing. I've entered giveaways in the past in hopes to win their DVD's but never won. This movie series became a huge hit and newfound favorite with my daughter, Alyssa. She'd watch an episode every night if I would let her. I found them to be Biblically accurate and of high quality. She's learning a lot by watching them.

"Friends and Heroes Episode 15 Over Walls" was the perfect show for us to watch, because my daughter could make movie connections to her Bible History studies. Another popular animated series I found available for young children besides "Friends and Heroes" was "Davey and Goliath.

Several of our favorite gMovies movies so far were Marriage Retreat, Raising Izzie, My Mother's Future Husband, Finding Normal, Heaven is Waiting, Meant to Be, What If, A Cross to Bear, and The Carpenter's Miracle.

A couple of the movies mentioned above were on my list to watch, but I couldn't find them at the library or at movie rental locations. I did a little happy dance after finally seeing a few of the shows I wanted to see. Many of the available movies are feel good movies that teach valuable lessons.

I can't wait to further explore the documentaries in hopes to match movies up with my daughter's history studies. I saw a neat "Faith of Fathers" documentary that would be great to utilize this year. I even found a documentary on gMovies that is mentioned as a resource in one of our American History unit studies titled, "The Role of Pastors and Christians in Civil Government."   

"Pieces of Easter" had a good plot but the film quality seemed poorer than the others and the movie was slow. It was the only movie that I wasn't 100% pleased with during the review period. However, Alyssa liked it because it had a good message in the end. Other available Easter shows to watch are "Max Lucado's Resurrection" and "At Jesus' Side."

I will say that the "Max Lucado's Resurrection" movie did contain a few quick flashback bloody images of Jesus' injuries, but that is to be expected considering the plot of the story. They weren't too graphic and didn't seem to bother my daughter.

Special Note: Of course with any movie, including those on gMovies, you should consider watching the movie in advance to determine if your child should view it.

Vendor Suggestions

• I do wish that the ratings for each movie were clearly stated. If the summary sounded questionable in any way, I would always do a quick search for the movie trailer and rating to be on the safe side. This wastes precious time that could be spend with my family.   
• Each movie should also mentioned somewhere near the summary age ranges or notes about the content in the movie so that parents can make a more educated decision about what they want their children to view especially since we all differ greatly in what we allow our children to view.

Recommendations
I highly recommend this subscription to families looking for Christian faith-based movies and shows to watch during family movie night. It would make a great gift for relatives and friends. I am going to watch as many movies as I possibly can in the next six months and I may consider renewing my subscription in the future. I also think this would be a great subscription for libraries to offer guests if that option is available.

Overall Experience
Reviewing gMovies was a pleasant experience often bringing laughter into our home. Several movies even triggered thought-provoking questions for us to consider and discuss. The movie messages had good hearted intentions. We could relax during a fun-filled family movie night knowing the choices were safe for our family. The movies reminded me of a few selections we've watched on the Lifetime or Hallmark channels which were two of our favorite television channels. I can't wait to see which movie titles and shows are added in the next couple months!

My Thoughts
The 233-page softcover parenting book is jam-packed with information that should be read by all parents. This Christian book focuses on the social, emotional, spiritual, and mental impact that screen-time has on children.

One chapter in particular hit close to home. Chapter 13 explores Screen Time and the Single Parent. It addresses the difficulties of being a single parent and how divorce impacts the child. I am definitely paying closer attention to how we spend our time together. I've been more intentional with placing limits on my daughter's screen time which can be difficult at times because we use technology in our homeschool and as part of her chore reward system. Furthermore, this chapter discusses the detrimental side effects of having too much screen time in a single parent home which also applies to two parent homes. It mentions the struggles of getting on the same page with your co-parenting spouse while emphasizing the importance of working together to establish similar rules and screen time limits for the sake of the child.

Chapter 14 helped me put into perspective the amount of time I personally spend in front of the screen. The book also helped me realize my priorities and what I desire for my child. I don't want my daughter to think that checking e-mails, working on my blog posts and reviews, and researching on the Internet are more important than our special time together. I really sat down and started evaluating how I run things in my home after reading this chapter. We, as parents, need to model our expectations and if we sit in front of a screen all day . . . what is that telling are children. They need us to be present and attentive to their needs. I desire to eventually have a balance of family time and technological use in my home which will in the long run help my daughter develop a stronger, healthier relationship with God and build friendships with others. I don't want her to miss out on exploring the great outdoors. I want her to play as a child rather than spending hours staring at animated screens. I also want my daughter to bond and have quality time with family and not allow technological devices to fill any emotional voids. 

Another chapter that I enjoyed reading was Chapter 10 which discusses Love Languages and how pertinent it is to identify and understand your child's love language so that you can fill their love tank. My daughter's love language is Quality Time and Physical Affection. She appreciates gifts and loves affirmations, but truly wants to spend more quality time with me and be held especially now when her heart is wounded and she's dealing with so many emotions. I also want her to feel genuinely loved and to know that I care deeply. 

Other features I enjoyed in the book were the list of screen-free ways to cultivate a thankful heart, the five keys to focus on when apologizing, homework helps, the screen-safe family pledge, and scripture verses to memorize when dealing with anger issues. 

You’ll find a short quiz at the back of the book to help you evaluate and determine whether or not your child is having too much screen time and if it could be harming their development. The ages and stages of social development are also listed and categorized. Additionally, there are discussion guides with reflective questions for each chapter which can be utilized during a parent study or Bible study group. The book also contains parental resources including the online Love Languages website, a children’s book, parenting book suggestions, and a few relationship books to read.  

Bottom Line
Growing Up Social discusses relevant and meaningful issues that should be addressed in today's society. This parenting book will challenge you to take back your home. Moderation is the key and can be reached with limitations with regards to technological use. I'm all about finding a balance in life, because I see both the advantages and disadvantages of screen time.

Recommendations
These are just a few of the chapters that had a profound influence on me, but there are other chapters that we could all benefit from reading. I HIGHLY recommend Growing Up Social: Raising Relational Kids in a Screen-Driven World. It is a must read for all parents or anyone thinking about having or working with children in the future!

VeggieTales: Celery Night Fever Movie Review and Giveaway

It was a privilege to have the opportunity to review the newest addition to the VeggieTales DVD collection, Celery Night Fever, as part of FLYBY Promotions Blogger Network review program. Celery Night Fever is exclusively available in DVD format and was released on August 5th.

VeggieTales is a beloved company that creates faith-based products and a line of family DVD's that teach children about God's love and how He made them special. Years ago my daughter received a collection of VeggieTales DVD's as a gift. Alyssa became a huge fan of the DVD's when she was much younger and since then we've added several more movies to our personal collection over the years. I was thrilled when I found out we had the opportunity to review Celery Night Fever!

DVD Synopsis

In Celery Night Fever, the retro funkadelic sights and sounds of polyester leisure suits and disco balls take center stage – along with a timeless message of friendship and forgiveness. Actor Terry Crews provides the voice of Bruce Onion, a nefarious real-estate developer who plans to turn the serene, green Celery Park into a parking lot. His unsavory scheme spurs Laura Carrot and Junior Asparagus to enact a bold plan: reuniting the long-lost ’70s band The Groovy Brothers to play at a fund-raising concert. The problem is, The Groovy Brothers haven’t spoken to each other in decades, and the members have little interest in getting back together.  Their long-simmering feud spills over to affect Laura and Junior.  It’s not just Celery Park that’s in jeopardy – if best friends can’t learn to forgive each other and accept each other’s faults, the veggies might lose their cherished community gathering spot. Celery Night Fever features six original songs, including a rousing number from Bruce Onion, showcasing the musical side of Terry Crews.

How We Used the DVD
We watched Celery Night Fever during family movie night as we snuggled on the couch eating popcorn. My 6 1/2 year-old daughter also watched the DVD several other times during the review period. This would be a great movie for children to watch with their friends during a sleepover or movie playdate.

Overall
Celery Night Fever is a wonderful family movie and addition to our VeggieTales collection! This DVD didn't disappoint us. The story's plot was entertaining and engaging. The VeggieTale stories always teach valuable lessons with appropriate scenes and adorable characters. There was only one awkwardly funny part where Junior came out wearing his underwear over his pants after realizing he was late meeting his friend, Laura. My daughter couldn't stop laughing. Alyssa sat through the entire show without EVER getting bored! It doesn't surprise me that VeggieTales has once again captured her undivided attention.

The movie consists of catchy disco-style musical tunes. As always, the music motivated my daughter. Her favorite song from the movie was "Perfect Puppy." I caught her groovin' to all the fun tunes on many occasions. She LOVED dancing to the six original songs included in the show.

Celery Night Fever lasts approximately 45 minutes and provides both English and Spanish subtitles. I appreciate that the VeggieTale products always emphasize great moral values. I was throughly impressed with the fact that Alyssa automatically caught on to the story's theme. She learned to value the importance of friendship and forgiveness in a fun, interactive way without further explanation from me. The message contains meaningful lessons which can be applied to my daughter's life and her relationships with both friends and family members. I'm glad that my daughter is still young enough to appreciate and watch the high quality shows created by the VeggieTales team. I can trust that VeggieTales DVD's will always contain appropriate content that my daughter can safely view without constant supervision.

The movie arrived at the perfect time for our family. We are currently dealing with unfortunate circumstances where forgiveness has been extremely difficult. This movie served as a great reminder during these challenging times. The message is that we should forgive others just as God has forgiven us. I truly want my daughter to know that she can forgive others when they have wronged or hurt us. Everyone should also understand that holding grudges hurts and brings trouble to all involved. Other underlying themes in this show are hope, trust, and selfishness.

We enjoyed the psychedelic celery experiment and had a blast making tie dyed rice cereal treats. We have plans later this week to watch the show again. Recommendations
I HIGHLY recommend Celery Night Fever and ALL VeggieTales movies to children ages 2-7 yeas old. VeggieTales fans will definitely appreciate this show! The important message is one that we can ALL learn and benefit from. I recommend this DVD for at home use and to use during Sunday School class at church. I look forward to seeing future shows. I can't wait to watch Beauty and the Beet featuring Kellie Pickler in the fall!

Little Lads and Ladies of Virtue Review and Giveaway

Are you looking for a character program for younger children? Many parents want to instruct their child with the right tools to become good citizens with Godly character especially in today's world. I have a strong desire to raise my daughter to be a virtuous woman with good character. I started teaching Alyssa about character qualities at a very young age, because I believe children learn a tremendous amount the first five years of their life. As a parent, I also understand that it is my responsibility to teach, raise, and disciple my child using the Bible if that is my wish. It was a blessing and privilege to review Little Lads and Ladies of Virtue written by Kathie Morrissey, the owner of The Character Corner. The Character Corner offers character, purity, courtship, and parenting products. Kathie's well organized curriculum will help your children develop and grow Godly character traits.

Little Lads and Ladies of Virtue is a character curriculum containing scripture-based weekly lessons. You'll receive a 121-page curriculum book giving you at least 6 months worth of planned character training lessons if you teach one character quality five days a week. You can easily extend the lessons if desired. However, extensions are not necessary. The curriculum is designed to be used with preschool and early elementary aged children between the ages of 4-8. It addresses 24 character qualities focusing on one character trait per week. Bible verses related to the character quality are memorized. Each weekly lesson is arranged to be done on a daily basis with minimal prep for approximately 5-10 minutes.

Each lesson follows a similar format which helps your child become familiar with the lesson routine. The weekly curriculum lessons emphasize the definition of one character quality or trait, a related referenced Bible memory verse, three "I Will" statements to commit to their hearts, and a specific prayer. Adaptable object lessons, games, and role play activities are also integrated into the lessons. Alyssa really liked the "Attentiveness" and "Mama Says" games. Little did she know, we always play the "attentiveness" game but I never called it that.

The author recommends that you consistently review older material at least once a week to keep it fresh in their minds. She also encourages you to develop creative ways to make learning memory verses more fun by using motions, drawings, or different intonations. You can also view a sample lesson.

The curriculum consists of acknowledgements, an introduction, lesson instructions, a resource and materials list, color pages, "Something to Crow About" reward chart, and character ribbon badges in addition to the weekly lessons. Most of the materials used for the hands-on object lessons were easily found at home. The acknowledgement list gives other resources credit for ideas utilized. This list also contains website links with additional activity enrichment ideas.

Furthermore, optional manuscript copywork is available for elementary children. The copywork correlates with the curriculum. Your child will have the opportunity to copy the definition, Bible verse, and the three "I Will" statements. The pages reinforce the character quality being taught while your child practices good penmanship skills. If the lines are too small for your older elementary children, then you can always use a lined paper of your choice with or without the dotted help lines.

How We Used The Curriculum Bundle
I must say . . . thanks to the idea of a fellow reviewer on the team, I decided to downloaded the PDF file of the main curriculum book to iBooks on my iPad instead of printing the pages. This made the lessons portable and saved money on ink cost. You can also read the lessons on your computer which is extremely helpful.

I followed the weekly lessons as intended. My six-year-old daughter loved completing the copywork sentences and looked forward to her daily lessons. I asked her to complete one copywork page each day. We could easily complete two pages on busier days. The coloring page was completed on the first day. Alyssa strived to memorize the material before the fifth day and in most cases met that challenge. On many occasions, we would sing the information to be memorized by using familiar tune.

Funny story . . . one day while completing household duties I caught her reciting (singing) the definition, Bible verse, and "I Will" statements in the shower. I was surprised yet thrilled to find out that the curriculum did indeed inspire her to remember what she was learning and hide God's Word in her heart. She was definitely motivated by the ribbon badges too! She felt successful when she accomplished her memorization goals. I really appreciate that the author focused on the character trait opposites while introducing the definition. This helps children understand the meaning of the trait better.

A Glance at Our Weekly Schedule
Day 1
Introduce the definition and scripture memory verse. Color the character quality page and complete the definition copywork page. End with prayer.

Day 2
The beginning of each day begins with a review of what was previously learned. Review definition and memory verse. Introduce the "I Will" statements. Complete the Bible verse copywork page and end the lesson with a prayer.

Day 3
Review definition, memory verse, and "I Will" statements. Introduce any role play scenarios, object lessons, or play games. End with a specific prayer relating to the trait.

Alyssa said, "Half-full." 

We modified the following fort building "Courage vs. Foolishness" game by using a Disney playhut we already owned. She didn't have an interest in building a fort, but I bet many younger children would. Statements were read aloud. Alyssa made a decision as to whether they revealed foolishness (lack of courage) or if they showed courage.

Looking Ahead: I can't wait to do the object lesson with the egg on Day 4 when discussing forgiveness!

Day 4
Review all information once again. Continue playing games or read books if stated. Complete any new role play activities. Another daily copywork section is completed.

Day 5
The final section of copywork is completed on this day. Review and receive ribbon badge to display on reward chart for memorized concepts. You can store the previously earned badges, but we chose to display them all at once. One of the reviewers created a memorization chart that I hope to make soon! Possible Improvements
One problem I ran into was with regards to the games that required more than one player such as "David, David, Goliath" which is played like "Duck, Duck, Goose." I wish there were alternative suggestions for those of us teaching only one child, but you can easily adapt the activity to your circumstances. Further into the curriculum, activities such as the Gratitude Circle and the Joyful Bean Bag Toss will be slightly modified for two people. We'll just toss the bean bag bag and forth several times. With that being said, we are thoroughly enjoying and will definitely continue using this curriculum! I have noticed a difference in Alyssa's attitude and have seen her apply the information learned to her life.

I highly recommend this simple and effective character curriculum to private schools, home educators, preschools, day care facilities, Christian summer camps, after school care, and to families wanting a quick and easy morning Bible devotional to use with their young children. This curriculum was easy to implement and add to any daily routine requiring very little time and preparation each day. I was pleased with the material and short lessons. Kathie Morrissey did an fantabulous job creating a complete character training curriculum for younger children between the ages of 4-8.
